Organic Food

Why should we eat Organic Food?

When we purchase organic food over conventionally grown food we are making an important decision that will defiantly affect us for the rest of our lives. One of the big questions that we might ask ourselves; is organic food really better.

It seems that the organic food industry is defiantly growing in popularity, and sales have increased considerably and seems that it will continue to grow.

Let us look at the differences in Organic farming verses conventional farming in there methods used for growing their crops.    Traditional farmers use chemical fertilizers to grow their crops, while organic farmers use natural fertilizers to feed and build soil.    Traditional farmers use chemical insecticides to get rid of insect pest and diseases, while organic farmers uses a more natural method of control by using insect predators and barriers for insect and disease control. Traditional farmers use synthetic chemical herbicides to control weed growth, while organic farmers use mulches, hand weeding, crop rotation, tillage, and cover crop to control weeds.

With the conventionally grown foods, we find chemical residues that are harmful to us. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides, and 30 percent of insecticides to be carcinogenic.

Organic produce has 27 percent more nutrients than Conventional produce. Organic crops have a significantly higher level of nutrients like vitamin C, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron, and significantly less nitrates which are considered toxins.

With this information, it is proven that Organic foods are definitely superior to Conventional ones.

As more and more consumers demand Organic products the more the prices of them will drop, and the supply will increase making it easier to find them.

If we buy conventional produce, there are a few ways to reduce our exposure to pesticides. We should thoroughly wash all of our fruits and vegetables although the pesticide residues cannot be removed by washing. We can peel or remove the outer layer of leaves of the vegetables if possible. We can grow our own vegetables, although this takes time space it would be well worth the wait.
